Buy an EZ Bar – Curl Bar for Effective Arm Training
The EZ bar – also known as a curl bar, or curl bar – is the most effective training tool for isolated biceps and triceps training. Unlike a straight barbell, its characteristic curved shape allows for an ergonomic wrist position that prevents injuries and optimizes muscle activation. At motion sports, you'll find high-quality EZ bars in 30 mm and 50 mm – from ATX and other premium brands – for your home gym and professional fitness studio use.
What is an EZ Bar and how does it work?
The EZ bar (also EZ Curl Bar or Curl Bar) is a special barbell with a characteristic W-shaped curve. This curved shape allows for a supinated or semi-supinated grip, which puts the wrists in a more natural position than a straight barbell. The result: less strain on wrists and elbows, better muscle activation, and safer exercise execution. Available in two standard diameters: 30 mm for standard weight plates and 50 mm for Olympic weight plates.
30 mm vs. 50 mm – which curl bar is right for you?
The 30 mm EZ bar is the classic version for standard weight plates. It is lighter, more affordable, and ideal for beginners and home gyms. The sleeves have an inner diameter of 30 mm and are compatible with all standard weight plates. The 50 mm EZ bar (Olympic) is the professional version for Olympic weight plates with a 50 mm bore. It is heavier (approx. 7–10 kg self-weight), more stable, and offers smooth rotation (spin) due to ball bearings – ideal for intense training sessions and studio use. If you already use Olympic barbells and plates with a 50 mm bore, we recommend the 50 mm version for maximum compatibility.
The 5 most effective exercises with the Curl Bar
1. Biceps Curls (standing or seated): The classic for building biceps. A narrow grip focuses on the long head of the biceps, while a wide grip focuses on the short head and forearm muscles. Perform slowly and controlled – full extension at the bottom, maximum contraction at the top. 3–4 sets of 8–12 repetitions.
2. Triceps Extensions / French Press: Lying on a weight bench, the bar is lowered over the head and extended again. The ergonomic hand position allows for an ideal range of motion and reduces stress on the wrists. 3–4 sets of 8–12 repetitions.
3. Reverse Curls: With an overhand grip (pronation), the brachioradialis (forearm muscle) and brachialis (deep biceps muscle) are trained particularly effectively. Ideal for supplementing classic biceps training for thicker forearms. 3 sets of 10–15 repetitions.
4. Upright Rows: Pulling the bar up to the shoulder trains the trapezius and lateral shoulder muscles. The ergonomic grip reduces stress on the wrists compared to a straight bar. 3 sets of 10–12 repetitions.
5. Skull Crushers: Lying down, the bar is lowered from the extended position over the head – one of the most effective isolation exercises for the long head of the triceps. The curved shape allows for a deeper descent and thus a greater range of motion than with a straight bar. 3–4 sets of 8–12 repetitions.
Which muscles does the Curl Bar train?
The EZ bar is the most versatile tool for isolated arm training. Depending on the exercise, the following muscle groups are trained: The biceps brachii (long and short head) is intensely engaged in biceps curls and reverse curls. The brachialis (deep biceps muscle) is particularly activated in reverse curls and contributes to arm thickness. The brachioradialis (forearm muscle) is trained in reverse curls and upright rows. The triceps brachii (all three heads) is intensely engaged in French press and skull crushers. The forearm muscles are activated as stabilizers in all grip variations.
Advantages over a straight barbell
Ergonomic wrist position: The curved shape places the wrists in a more natural, semi-supinated position – significantly reducing stress on wrists and elbows.
Optimized muscle activation: The curved shape ensures better isolation and contraction of the target muscle.
Lower risk of injury: Ideal for trainees with wrist or elbow problems.
Versatility: Five different exercises with a single piece of equipment.
Compact: 100–120 cm long – ideal for home gyms with limited space.
Buying Guide – what to look for when buying?
The diameter (30 mm or 50 mm) determines compatibility with your weight plates. The material – high-quality steel with chrome or zinc coating – ensures corrosion resistance and durability. Knurling provides a secure grip even during heavy training – even, not too aggressive. Ball bearings on 50 mm models allow for smooth rotation of the weight plate sleeves. The load capacity should be at least 100 kg; professional models can carry up to 300 kg. Look for EN 20957 certification: H for home use, S for studio operation. We recommend the ATX EZ Curl Bar Pro as a first-class choice for home gyms and studios.
Suitable weight for the EZ bar
For optimal handling, we recommend a maximum of weight plates up to 10 kg (approx. 35 cm diameter). For exercises behind the head or close to the body, larger plates can negatively impact handling. Suitable additions: Polyurethane 4-Grip Weight Plates 30 mm or 50 mm.
Training plan for beginners and advanced users
Beginners start with 2–3 sets per exercise at moderate weight (12–15 repetitions) and focus on clean technique: Biceps Curls (3x12), French Press (3x12), Reverse Curls (2x15). Advanced users combine heavy compound exercises (6–8 repetitions) with isolation exercises (10–12 repetitions): Biceps Curls (4x8), Skull Crushers (4x8), Reverse Curls (3x12), Upright Rows (3x10). Allow at least 48 hours of recovery time between sessions.
Common training mistakes
Too heavy weight: No momentum – 8–12 clean repetitions are the goal.
Too short range of motion: Full extension at the bottom, maximum contraction at the top.
Elbows drift: Keep them tucked close to the body during biceps curls.
Too fast execution: The eccentric phase (lowering) should last 2–3 seconds.
Always the same grip: Regularly alternate between narrow and wide grips for complete bicep development.
