Barbells in 30 and 50 mm - Your Ultimate Selection

If you are interested in strength training, functional training, or targeted muscle building, you cannot get around it: the barbell. It is one of the most fundamental yet versatile training devices in the fitness sector – both for professional studios and ambitious home gyms. At motion sports, we offer you a comprehensive selection of high-quality barbells that impress with their quality, functionality, and workmanship. In our collection, you will find classic straight barbells, ergonomically shaped SZ and Super-SZ bars, as well as special variants such as Trap Bars, Fat Bars, and dumbbell bars.

To make it easier for you to choose the ideal barbell for your training, this comprehensive guide provides you with a well-founded overview of the different types of barbells and their specific areas of application. You will learn which type of bar best suits your training goals, what dead weight the respective models have, why barbells in particular are a sensible addition to your workout, what length is ideal for your needs, and how SZ bars differ from Super-SZ bars.

What is a barbell?

A barbell is a rod-shaped training device made of high-quality, usually hardened steel, and forms the basis for a variety of barbell exercises. By adding weight plates, the training weight can be individually and precisely adjusted – ideal for beginners as well as experienced strength athletes. For Olympic exercises such as snatch, clean and jerk, or deadlifts, we recommend using Bumper Plates – the shock-absorbing solid rubber weight plates protect the floor and the bar when dropped.

A key distinguishing feature of barbells is the diameter of the weight plate sleeve:

1. 30 mm (Standard): often found in home use

2. 50 mm (Olympic): international standard in professional and competitive sports

In addition, barbells differ in terms of their length, shape, grip, knurling, flexibility ("whip"), and load capacity.

What types of barbells are there?

Choosing the right barbell is crucial for effective, safe, and targeted strength training. motion sports offers you a wide selection of barbells for every training requirement:

1. Olympic Barbell: This bar is the classic in strength sports. With a length of 220 cm, a dead weight of 20 kg, and a 50 mm sleeve, it is ideal for basic exercises such as squats, deadlifts, and bench presses. Thanks to needle bearings and a grippy knurling, it is perfect for use in powerlifting, weightlifting, and CrossFit.

2. Barbell 30 mm: This more compact variant with a length of 167 to 200 cm and a 30 mm sleeve is specially designed for home use. It is lighter than the Olympic version and compatible with many home gym plates. Ideal for beginners, recreational athletes, and space-conscious users.

3. EZ Bar (Curl Bar): The EZ bar is slightly curved, allowing for an ergonomic hand position during arm training. Especially with bicep curls, French presses, or tricep pushdowns, it relieves the wrists and ensures a joint-friendly workout.

4. Super EZ Bar: A further development of the classic EZ bar with a stronger curvature. It offers more grip options and allows for an even more natural hand position. Ideal for advanced users who want to vary their training specifically.

5. Trap Bar (Hex Bar): This hexagonal specialty bar allows you to stand in the middle of the bar. This relieves the lower back during deadlifts and shrugs, making it particularly interesting for beginners, rehab patients, and athletes with back problems.

6. Fat Bar (Axle Bar): This bar has a larger grip diameter (approx. 50 mm throughout) and thus promotes grip strength. It is preferably used in Strongman training.

7. Dumbbell Bar (loadable): Dumbbell bars offer you maximum flexibility for single-arm training. They are ideal for isolation exercises such as lateral raises, curls, or tricep kickbacks.

Which barbell is better?

This question can only be answered individually. The "better" barbell is always the one that optimally suits your training goal and your setup. Basically:

1. For basic exercises such as squats, deadlifts, and bench presses – Olympic barbell with 50 mm sleeve.

2. For joint-friendly arm training – EZ or Super EZ bar.

3. For functional training or CrossFit – flexible bars with good whip and robust bearings.

4. In a home gym with limited space – compact barbells or 30 mm models.

5. For more ergonomic deadlifts – Trap Bar.

Is a barbell useful?

The barbell is one of the most effective and versatile training devices in strength sports. Its acquisition is recommended for almost every training-ambitious person – whether for targeted muscle building, increasing maximum strength, or functional full-body training. With just a few exercises – such as squats, deadlifts, bench presses, and overhead presses – the entire body can be effectively trained with the barbell.

Cleaning and maintenance of a barbell

Intensive strength training leaves traces not only on the body but also on the equipment. Barbell bars, in particular, are exposed to special stresses due to regular use and contact with sweat, magnesium, and skin oils. With suitable cleaning brushes, high-quality microfiber cloths, and special care oils, even fine knurling can be effectively cleaned and protected (care set).
